Tamarillo is a shrub .The fruit is egg shaped.Tastes like a tomato. It is also known as the tree tomato, tomate serrano, sachatomate ,tomate andino , tomate de yuca etc.The leaves are large and simple. But bears a strong pungent smell.The plant is not tolerant of drought stress.This plant set fruit throughout the year incase of little annual variation.The fruit is low in calories.The plant is a fast-growing tree.The colour of the fruit varies from yellow to red and almost purple.The fruits are very high in iron .The life expectancy is about 12 years.The tree usually forms a single upright trunk .The plant also bears lateral branches.The leaves are perennial. The flowers are pink-white. The flowers form clusters of 10 to about 50 flowers. The roots are shallow.The plant can be damaged by strong winds.More than one harvest is necessary since ripening of fruits is not simultaneous
