Poovan is a small banana variety traditionally cultivated across Kerala. In its raw state, it has a green colour and is thickly clustered in a bunch. It is generally cultivated as a perennial crop.Upon ripening it attains yellow colour and is considered to be one of the sweetest variety popular across the people.Over-ripening changing it to black colour and tends to fall from the bunch. Throughout Tamil Nadu and in certain parts of Kerala Poovan is also commercially cultivated for leaf industry.Fruits turn to attractive golden yellow on ripening.The plant usually bears medium sized bunch with closely packed fruits.It is a leading commercial cultivar grown throughout India .It is highly susceptible to Banana Bract Mosaic Viral (BBMV) disease and Banana Streak Virus, (BSV), which cause considerable reduction in yield.Due to its climatic and marginal soil condition Tamil Nadu is the leading producer of Poovan cultivar .Fruit is firm and slightly acidic and has a typical sour-sweet aroma. This variety has good keeping quality. It is resistant to fruit cracking .
